August 9, 2002 TO: Kathy Thompson Diane Elben Tony Busalacci Harold Annegarn Christos Zerefos FROM: Anne Thompson I am writing as a member of the Program Committee for the 7th International Conference on Southern Hemisphere Meteorology and Oceanography (7ICSHMO), also called the AMS Southern Hemisphere Conference. NASA is a sponsor. Because the meeting will interest some of your organization or mailing list, please distribute. Thank you! ** 23 September Abstract Deadline - AMS Southern Hemisphere Meeting ** The next triennial Southern Hemisphere Meeting of the AMS (American Meteorological Society) will be held 24-28 March 2003 in Wellington, New Zealand. Solicited areas for papers are atmospheric and oceanic sciences in the southern hemisphere. Interdisciplinary offerings in climate, radiation, atmospheric chemistry and dynamics (including polar processes) are especially encouraged. ABSTRACTS ARE DUE 23 SEPTEMBER AT THE AMS (American Meteorological Society) WEBSITE: www.ametsoc.org/Meetings - Scroll to Southern Hemisphere meeting. The overall theme of the conference is "Southern Ocean weather and climate: Regional and global effects." Sessions will focus on: the southern oceans, Antarctica and the cryosphere, atmospheric chemistry and trace gases, and climate and culture. The conference organizers aim to take an inclusive view of weather and climate, encompassing all aspects of atmospheric and ocean sciences, and human responses and impacts upon climate variability and change. New Zealand is an ideal location for observing and improving our understanding of southern hemisphere climate. It interacts with major features of the hemispheric climate and also reacts sensitively to changes in the broad-scale circulation. Year-round westerly winds have a controlling influence on local climates, resulting in a factor of 10 difference in rainfall across 100km of the South Island. Wellington, the host city for the 7ICSHMO, is the southern-most national capital in the world, sited near the edge of the "roaring forties." Its harborside location offers a first-hand experience of air-sea interaction and vistas of the southern ocean stretching unobstructed south to Antarctica. -- See News on SHADOZ homepage !!! http://code916.gsfc.nasa.gov/Data_services/shadoz/Shadoz_hmpg2.html !!!
