July 9 , 2007 - Quadrennial Ozone Symposium (2008) Preliminary Plans Announced

The Quadrennial Ozone Symposium will be held in Tromsoe, Northern Norway from June 29th (Sunday) to July 5th (Saturday), 2008.   For further information see: www.qos2008.no.

 

April 26, 2007 - Update on 20th Anniversary of the Montreal Protocol Symposium

At the invitation of UNEP, WMO, EESC, IO3C, the Academy of Athens and the National Observatory of Athens, a core group of speakers who have played an important role in the success of the Montreal Protocol from its very beginning, will gather together in Athens, between 23-26 September 2007, to present state of the art scientific results and discuss the success of the implementation of the Montreal Protocol. September 16, 2006 _ International Ozone Day

A press release is available on the event of the 2005 International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer. The theme of the day this year is "Protect the Ozone Layer: Save Life on Earth".  More than two decades since the appearance of the springtime Antarctic ozone hole, ozone remains depleted.

 

October 25, 2005 _ Anver Ghazi

On the 25th of July our dear colleague Dr. Anver Ghazi died after a painful battle with cancer. We lost a good friend, scientist, and administrator.   Paul J. Crutzen provides this obituary.

 

October 10, 2005 _ WMO Professor Mariolopoulos Trust Fund Award Nominations

Nominations are now being accepted for the WMO Professor Mariolopoulos Trust Fund Award, which is offered by the Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation for the Environmental Sciences for an "outstanding reserach paper in atmospheric sciences published or accepted during the last two years in a refereed journal by a young scientist (below 35 years of age by the date of publication). The deadline for nominations is January 31, 2006. More details are available here.

 

September 16, 2005 - Press Release on the 2005 International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer

A new press release is available on the event of the 2005 International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer. According to the release, "More than two decades since the appearance of the springtime Antarctic ozone hole, ozone remains depleted."

 

October 28, 2004 - WMO Antarctic Ozone Bulletin

The WMO has released its 6th Antarctic Ozone Bulletin for 2004 stating that, "The ozone hole continues to be much smaller than the average size the past decade." However, despite it's small size, the "ozone mass deficit" has remained relatively high this year.


October 15, 2004 - WMO Antarctic Ozone Bulletin

The WMO has released its 5th Antarctic Ozone Bulletin for 2004 stating that, "The ozone hole has decreased in size by about 25% from its maximum size in mid-September,".... part of its seasonal cycle.


September 30, 2004 - WMO Antarctic Ozone Bulletin

The WMO has released its 4th Antarctic Ozone Bulletin for 2004 stating that, "During the past two weeks, all but one of the reporting ground-based Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) Antarctic stations have measured ozone values well below the 1964-76 pre-ozone hole norms. "

The WMO has released its 3rd Antarctic Ozone Bulletin for 2004 detailing the current condition of the ozone hole over the antarctic continent.


September 15, 2004 - Press Release on the 2004 International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer

A new press release is available on the event of the 2004 International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer. According to the release, "On the 20 th anniversary of the discovery of the spring time Antarctic ozone hole, ozone remains depleted in the SH spring and over the high northern latitudes following cold winters."

The WMO has released its 2nd Antarctic Ozone Bulletin for 2004.

The WMO has released its 1st Antarctic Ozone Bulletin for 2004.


June 15, 2004 - Quadrennial Symposium Successful

The twentieth Quadrennial Symposium on Atmospheric Ozone coincides with the 20th anniversary of the discovery of the springtime Antarctic ozone hole. It also marks two decades of intensified basic research in atmospheric chemistry and physics and in global atmospheric monitoring. The progress in our understanding of the impact of human activities on the chemistry and physics of the global stratosphere since the previous Quadrennial Ozone Symposium was presented among the 690 research papers at the XX Quadrennial Ozone Symposium, held in Kos, Greece, 1-8 June 2004. The International Ozone Commission is now accepting nominations for the 2003 Dobson Award For Young Scientists which is granted for one or more outstanding research paper(s) in atmospheric sciences published or accepted in a refereed journal since the last Quadrennial Ozone Symposium (July 2002) by a young scientist (age below 35 years by the date of acceptance of the paper).
